‘Women Belong in The Kitchen’, Tweets Burger King
The food chain came up with an explanation and insisted that it wanted to draw attention to meager number of women in the restaurant industry
‘Women belong in the kitchen’, a five-word tweet by Burger King UK chapter on International Women’s Day on March 8 sparked outrage around the world.
So much so that the fast-food chain had to delete the tweet and tender an apology.
However, Burger King UK maintained that the tweet was misconstrued and it just wanted to draw attention towards the lack of female chefs in the restaurant industry.
However, the ‘Women belong in the kitchen’ post, apparently misconstrued, drew ire and people demanded Burger King to undo the tweet.

But, the food chain came up with an explanation and insisted that it wanted to draw attention to meager number of women in the restaurant industry.
We think it’s weird that women make up only 20% of chefs in the UK restaurant industry. That’s why we’ve created a scholarship to help give more of our female employees the chance to pursue a culinary career.

After almost half a day of explanatory comments, Burger King tendered an apology for the tweet after immense public pressure.
We decided to delete the original tweet after our apology. It was brought to our attention that there were abusive comments in the thread and we don’t want to leave the space open for that.

But some Twitter users had taken screenshots and photos of the same advertisement which the food chain had published in a daily newspaper and on its Instagram story on International Women’s Day.
