11th December, International Mountain’s day, as per UN Declaration.

In Karachi, its main celebration was held today, under the umbrella of FPCC&I’s Standing Committee on Tourism and Culture at campus of College of Tourism and Hotel Management.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest & Committee’s Convenor Salman Javed said that the day is celebrated to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life and to build alliances that will bring positive changes to mountain people and to improve/protect mountains from pollution and thereby protect plains from floods, particularly in countries like Pakistan home to several ranges of mountains.

Touching upon this Year’s theme I.e Women move Mountains, he stressed that women are the primary managers of mountains resources, guardians of biodiversity, and keepers of traditional knowledge, and local culture of mountains. He also advised of a UNFAO study called Mountains of the world- Challenges, Resilience & Collective power, highlighting stories of Mountain Women in 8 countries.

Mr Talib Fateh, Regional Director Adventure Foundation of Pakistan introduced to the audience the Northern Areas of Pakistan.

Dr.Nuzhat Khan former Director General of Institute of Oceanography spoke about the beautiful mountain range along the Makran Coastal Highway.

Generalist Mehndi Baloch spoke about the Gorakh Hills in Sind and stressed for development therein.
Students of College of Tourism made an impressive presentation on 7 out of World ‘s ten higest mountains, housed in Pakistan.

The celebration was rounded off with an impressive show of scenic mountain areas and lives of their people, prepared by GB Tourism Corporation.
