Edibles Soar in July Despite Dip in Overall Inflation

The prices of edible items continue to go up in July despite the decline in the overall inflation rate compared to the previous month.
Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data showed inflation measured through Consumer Price Index (CPI) at 8.4% compared to 9.7% in June.
However, the drop in inflation rate couldn’t impact well on the masses as the prices of different edible items including vegetables, sugar, flour, meat, milk, and ghee surged in July.

In comparison with June, the price of tomatoes rose by 101.63% and onion by 47.62% in rural areas while the prices of both vegetables swelled by 42.40% and 34.55% respectively in urban areas.
According to PBS data, the rates of different daily-use commodities surged by huge percentages during the past year.
The prices of vegetables went up by 33%, ghee and cooking oil by 32%, eggs by 25%, sugar by 23%, flour by 15%, spices by 18% and milk by 14%.
Clothing, footwear, and other related items got 16% more expensive in July 2021 compared to the same month last year while housing and utilities such as electricity, gas, and water bills also registered an increase of around 25%.
