Indian Cinema’s Most Romantic Scene Was Shot ‘Unromantically’
The shooting of Mughal-e-Azam took years to complete and by the time the iconic scene was shot, terms between Dilip and Madhubala were sour
One of the masterpieces of Indian cinema Mughal-e-Azam has completed its 61 years and to one’s surprise, the movie’s lead cast Dilip Kumar and Madhubala were not on talking terms while shooting the most romantic scene to date.
Dilip Kumar left his footmark as Salim which is often considered as one of his best works but it is not just him that creates the spark, Madhubala’s Anarkali was cheered for on-screen energy and remarkable performance too.

To date, the chemistry between Madhubala and Dilip remained unmatchable in the Hindi cinema and many movie critics have termed it as ‘Timeless’.
On the flip side, the romance witnessed on screen was drastically opposite to what was transpiring in the real lives of both.
In his biography Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow, he wrote, “The announcement of our pairing in Mughal-e-Azam made sensational news in the early 1950s because of the rumors about our emotional involvement”.
The shooting of the film took years to complete because of its expensive sets and production design and by the time they shot the famous scene, things were drastically tensed between the lead actors.
Keeping their personal differences aside, both respected the director’s visions in producing one of the most powerful scenes in Hindi cinema’s history.
