Health Workers Boycott Vaccination, OPDs in Islamabad

The employees in the federal government hospitals haven’t been paid the promised risk allowance even after a year

The health workers of the federal government hospitals have announced to boycott duties in OPDs and vaccination centers from July 12 over non-payment of promised health risk allowance after an year.

The government had announced a risk allowance equivalent to one-month pay for the frontline healthcare workers in the federal government hospitals after the pandemic outbreak last year.

However, the employees in the healthcare facilities in Islamabad haven’t been paid the promised sum until now even though the funds for the purpose have been earmarked.

The measure by the federal health workers is expected to halt the mass vaccination drive in the federal capital when the Delta variant has made its way.

The decision to boycott services was reached in a grand meeting attended by the workers of the National Institute of Health (NIH), Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Poly Clinic Hospital (PCH), Capital Development Authority (CDA) Hospital, and other federal government hospitals in the capital territory.

The workers’ alliance decided they would cease operations in the outpatient departments (OPDs) and vaccination centers until the health allowance is released.

In this regard, the health workers also staged a protest in the capital territory on Monday and demanded Prime Minister Imran Khan to ensure the release of the allocated funds.

The protesting health workers said that the government was discriminating against them, adding the boycott of OPDs and vaccination duties would continue until the fulfillment of demand.
