Local administration likely to demolish Nasla Tower manually

Only one demolition firm agreed to raze the building by controlled blast but for that it requires 120 days to carry out a lot of pre-demolition work.

There has been no significant progress so far on the part of the local administration for a safe demolition of Nasla Tower by controlled blasting in line with the orders of the Supreme Court. The Karachi commissioner has to submit a report on the demolition by Nov 3 (tomorrow).

However, keeping in the view prevailing situation, it seems difficult for the commissioner to submit the report within the stipulated time.

Sources said that 97 per cent of the tower is vacated as only 2-3 families (living abroad) have not shifted their belongings from the building.

In response to Expression of Interest published in newspapers, only six demolition companies had approached the District East.

The administration will hold interviews of the companies that have shown interest in the job before finalising the demolition plan.

One each of them was from Lahore and Islamabad, and the other four were Karachi-based firms. The company from Lahore, which works in collaboration with a foreign company, is the only company which has agreed to demolish the building through a controlled blast. But for that, the company would carry out a lot of pre-demolition work that would take at least 120 days.

After a proper survey, there was also a possibility that the Lahore-based company would resort to mechanical demolition.

The commissioner had earlier constituted an eight-member committee for the evaluation and selection of express of interest sought from different companies regarding the demolition of the Nasla Tower through a controlled blast.

In a recent meeting, sources said that it was decided to demolish Nasla Tower manually as it was impossible to safely destroy the building without damaging nearby structures by detonating an implosion device.

In the next meeting tomorrow (Wednesday), the commissioner Karachi and a technical committee will ask the contenders on the demolition procedure.
