Peshawar doctors fix heart valve without open-heart surgery

PIC doctors have successfully fixed heart valve of a patient without open-heart surgery using TAVI procedure.

PESHAWAR: The doctors of the sole government hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) for cardiac diseases, Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC), have successfully fixed the heart valve of a patient without open-heart surgery.

The PIC spokesperson Rifat Anjum said that the surgeons have conducted a kind of operation in KP for the first time in which the heart valve of a 60-year-old patient was fixed without open-heart surgery.

A cardiac specialist Dr Ali Raza of PIC told the media that Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure was adopted for the operation for the patient who suffers from serious cardiac conditions.

He added that the patient’s condition is out of danger, however, he is still kept at the intensive care unit (ICU).

He said that only two hospitals had conducted the kind of surgery across the country, whereas, the procedure was adopted at PIC for the first time. All kinds of facilities are available in PIC for people suffering from cardiac illness, he added.

The successful operation of the PIC doctors is being widely praised and people across the country are considering it a milestone in the medical history of Pakistan.
