Risky Venture: Wheeling, Stunting on the Rise in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Stunting and wheeling are portents of calamities that may even lead to death but its permeation among venturesome youth has become a concerning point for both government and parents. The young bikers, bare of safety gear, sprout out on the roads in groups and use them as tracks for stunting and wheeling amid blaring horns of vehicles.
In Peshawar only, three big hospitals registered some 14 fatalities due to accidents caused by wheeling and stunts during the past month. The cases of injuries owing to deadly practice are reported every day as well.
Wheeling and stunting can rightly be deemed as a portent of a calamity but still, so many young bikers do not mind doing it despite the dangers associated.
Traffic police across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have been quite active against wheeling and stunting too. Recently, the government has directed the police to give no leniency to motor-bikers seen doing the activity on the main arteries of the provincial capital.
Traffic SP Abbas Majeed Marwat expressed that unfortunately, one wheeling has become an offense not mostly considered as it is.
Underage and young bikers perform stunts without hesitating and fearing consequences.
“Youngsters put their lives in danger for a brief thrill”, he added.
SP told News360 that the traffic police imposed fines on over 3,000 bikers caught performing deadly activity on different roads of Peshawar.
As per the records of welfare foundations including Rescue 1122 and Edhi Foundation, around 60 percent of accidents reported in the provincial capital were a result of wheeling and stunts.
Further, the traffic police have formed special committees to curb the deadly practice.
Several crackdowns are launched and hundreds of altered motorbikes are impounded but it has thus far failed to reduce the passion of venturesome youngsters.
In this prevailing situation, the media as well as the parents need to play a role against the dangerous activity by creating awareness through programs and activities.
