Sindh govt to procure 250 biogas buses for Karachi

Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon had chaired a meeting to review progress on the biogas buses project under the Karachi’s Red Line BRT project.

The commissioner chaired the meeting with civic agencies with regard to utilities relocation.

He told the meeting that 250 “state-of-the-art” bio-hybrid buses will run under Red Line BRT project. The project will provide masses with a zero-emission mass transit system.

Last year, the provincial government awarded the contract for the civil work under the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project.

The contract signing ceremony was held in Karachi.

Sindh Transport Minister Awais Qadir speaking to the media had said that the Red Line BRT project will be built with the help of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The Sindh government’s share in the transport project would be 70 per cent.

The red line corridor project review meeting was chaired by commissioner Karachi Muhammad Iqbal Memon. During the meeting, the commissioner was briefed about the plan.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, deputy commissioners of districts East and South, KDA, KMC, district municipal bodies officers, Trans Karachi, K-Electric, Sui Southern Gas, NTC and PTCL.

The representatives of the Trans Karachi briefed the commissioner. The meeting also reviewed the steps for the transfer of utility lines on the planned corridor. Iqbal Memon directed the utility agencies to extend cooperation in the execution of the project and complete the plan of transferring lines falling in the corridor soon.

The steps were reviewed to start working on the plan during the meeting. The Karachi commissioner was apprised that the Red Line corridor plan is part of the BRT plan under which biogas buses from Malir Halt to Numaish to be run.

It was informed to the meeting that the tendering phase has completed and it will be awarded soon. The construction work will begin in December this year and the plan will be completed in two years.

The corridor will consist of 26 kilometers and 22 stations would be constructed on this line which will run from Malir Halt to Numaish via Model Colony, King Cottages, Safoora Goth, Met Office, NED University, Safari Park, Nipa, Urdu University, Masjid Baitul Mukarram, Civic Centre, Askari Park, Dawood University and Society Office.

The meeting was told that separate track will be built for pedestrians and bicycle riders. Paths on the both sides will be made environmentally friendly. $500 million will be spent on the project. The Asian Development Bank will extend financial support for this project.
