Geo News in trouble; Management accepted resignation of Managing Director Azhar Abbas

Management of Geo News accepted resignation of MD Azhar Abbas, he had resigned from position on April 19 due to non-increase in salary and non-timely payment, administration has also started firing those are protesting for their rights

Management of Geo News has accepted the resignation of Managing Director (MD) Azhar Abbas. MD Geo News Azhar Abbas resigned from his post on April 19 last month, but his resignation was not accepted.

Resignation of Managing Director (MD) Azhar Abbas of private TV channel Geo News was accepted. He had resigned last month in April in protest over the issue of salaries, but the administration put him on hold.

According to sources, MD Geo News Azhar Siddiqui had resigned due to non-payment of salaries on time. Azhar Abbas wrote in his resignation that he cannot be a part of such an organization where employees are exploited.

According to sources, resigned managing director of Geo News in his resignation drew attention of the owners of institution to the issues of non-increase in salaries and timely payment for the past seven years.

Geo News MD Azhar Abbas clarified in his resignation that management assured that all arrears will be paid before Eid-ul-Fitr, but so far no payment has been made to employees.

In country’s largest media houses, Geo and Jang Group, protests are going on for last few months for timely payment of salaries and increments, during which journalists and media employees went on strike.

After protests by journalists and media workers, Geo News management filed cases against journalists in labor court, while many employees from Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore were dismissed from their jobs.

Geo News and Jang Group have registered a case in Labor Court against several journalists including Kashif Mushtaq, Sulaiman Saadat, and Zeeshan Shah who protested against salary increases and timely payment.

Two days ago, Geo News dismissed Karachi Bureau Chief Faheem Siddiqui from his job, which is being strongly condemned. Faheem Siddiqui was constantly active for rights of Jang and Geo employees and journalists.

President of Karachi Union of Journalists Dasturi, Khalil Nasir, has strongly condemned dismissal of Faheem Siddiqui, head of Geo Action Committee, and demanded Geo News administration reinstate him immediately.

It should be noted that Jang and Geo News employees had been protesting for past few months on the issue of salary increases and timely payment. During the protest, the employees left their pens and went on strike.
