Independent Candidates Surprise in Cantonment Elections

The latest countrywide results show PTI has won 63 seats while PML-N is following with 59 seats and independent candidates have 52 seats

Although Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has taken the lead in the cantonment elections, independent candidates have emerged as the third big power in the cantonment board elections held across the country on Sunday.

Of the total of 219 wards in the cantonment areas across the country, the polling was held in 206 wards.

The unofficial countrywide results show PTI stealing the show but a huge number of independents triumphing have also drawn attention.

The latest countrywide results show PTI has won 63 seats while PML-N is following with 59 seats and independent candidates winning 52 seats.

PPP stands 4th in the race with 17 seats while MQM-P secured 10 seats.

PTI leads in Karachi

In Karachi, PTI has emerged as the biggest party with its candidates winning 14 seats while PPP, which is ruling the province for over a decade, stands second with 11 seats while 6 independents also claimed victory.

PML-N displays strength in Punjab

PML-N has displayed strength in Punjab by winning 51 seats in total while some 32 seats have been claimed by independent candidates and 28 by PTI.

PML-N maintained its winning streak in provincial capital Lahore from where it won in 15 of total 20 wards.

The ruling PTI could only win 3 seats while one seat was grabbed by an independent candidate.

PTI faces defeat in Peshawar, leads in KP

However, PTI looks in a better position in Khyber Pakhtunkwa (KP) as it has won in 16 of 33 wards in the provincial capital as per the latest results.

But the party in the second term of its government in the province won only in the single ward of the total of 5 wards in the provincial capital, Peshawar, while 2 wards were triumphed by PPP.

ANP and an independent candidate each grabbed one seat.

The polling began at 8 am on Sunday and continued uninterrupted until 5 pm and the entire process was held peacefully across the country.

Some incidents of minor clashes between the activists of different political parties were although reported.
