No More Jeans & Tights For Educators of Islamabad

Federal Directorate of Education has revised dress code policy as research says that attire influences people’s perceptions

Revising the dress code in educational institutions, Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has imposed a ban on jeans, tights, and t-shirts for teachers during duty hours.

In the notification, FDE directed teachers to also wear teaching gowns as well as lab coats while performing duties in classes and laboratories.

Moreover, all principals have been directed to ensure that teaching and non-teaching staff (both male and female) maintain personal hygiene.

The federal body added that research has proven that attire has an influence on people’s perceptions and is more than just about something you are wearing.

“At first instance, the outlook imposes a very positive expectation subjective to the likeliness and behavior pattern of the students”, reads the notification.

Recently, France banned girls under 18 from wearing the hijab in public in April this year.

In response, Prime Minister Imran Khan called it ‘secular extremism’ and questioned “Why is it such a big issue if someone wants to cover their head?”

Some of the internet users are of the view that if Imran Khan can raise his voice against the hijab ban in France then why he can’t stand against FDE’s initiative.

According to the notification, FDE has recommended simple and decent shalwar kameez/trousers with dupatta/shawl along with formal shoes including pumps, loafers, and mules for female teachers.

Moreover, the teachers wearing headscarves will be allowed to wear scarves and hijab.

On the other hand, wearing shalwar kameez only with waistcoat, dress shirt with a tie and half sleeves dress shirt and/or bush shirt has been recommended for male staff while shawls (chadars), sweaters, coats, and jerseys are allowed during the winter season.

For footwear, men can only wear formals like dress shoes, loafers, moccasins, boots, sneakers, and sandals.

Most importantly, all non-teaching staff must also always maintain presentable attire and wear neat, clean, and properly ironed clothes and appropriate shoes.
