Amid Threats, Karachi Administrator Beefs up Ashura Security

The data shared by the police say 15,971 Majalis will be held in Sindh while 6,288 minor and 717 major processions will be organized in different parts of the province

Reviewing the security arrangements on Youm-e-Ashura, Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab and Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah seem contented with the planning and assured safe and sound processions across the province.

The data shared by the police say 15,971 Majalis (mourning congregations) will be held in Sindh besides 6,288 minor and 717 major processions.

In the megacity Karachi, more than 5,000 security personnel will be deployed to provide security to mourners during the main procession.

Some 832 non-gazette officers, 4,000 head constables, and 113 policewomen will be stationed along the routes of the procession and at the venues of congregations on Youm-e-Ashura.

Moreover, 20 senior police officers and 53 deputy superintendents of the Karachi police will oversee the security duties.

Administrator Murtaza Wahab reviewed all security arrangements and met the organizers of the main procession.

Talking to News360, Murtaza said the law enforcement agencies have been directed to keep security tightened and ensure anything unusual or suspicious is reported immediately.

“From fixing street lights, gutter holes and broken roads, the respective departments have extended their full support in making the procession feasible for the Shia community”, the administrator said.

On the other hand, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said during a media talk that the current scenario in Afghanistan might have an impact on Muharram.

He assured that the authorities have tried their best to make strict arrangements to deal with the threats.

Recalling the unresolved Mowach Goth incident on August 14, the chief minister requested citizens to cooperate with the Sindh government in maintaining the law and order situation on Ashura days.
