LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-President Maryam Nawaz has refused to tender an apology over her alleged audio leak in which former information minister Pervaiz Rasheed used insulting words for media persons.

Maryam Nawaz had said during a press conference yesterday she was not answerable to anyone but those who leaked her private telephonic conversation with Pervaiz Rasheed. She also demanded a private news channel for airing her leaked audiotape and blamed the government ministers.

The PML-N VP had said that an apology should be tendered to her for taping her telephonic conversation. She alleged that Intelligence Bureau (IB) had leaked her audiotape.

It may be noted here that the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Karachi Press Club (KPC) President Fazil Jamili and other media associations condemned the PML-N leaders’ remarks against the journalist community and demanded an apology from her.

Analysts have termed Maryam Nawaz’s refusal to apology an open challenge for the media organisations and associations. They said that the media associations could boycott PML-N media coverage following the insulting remarks in the alleged audio leak.

They questioned that if IB was involved in the audio leak, then Maryam Nawaz should ask her father, the then prime minister Nawaz Sharif, for looking into the fact how the intel agency recorded her telephonic conversation.

Another audio leak of PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz had surfaced in which she was allegedly talking to former information minister Pervaiz Rasheed regarding the contacts with the media houses.

In the audio leak, they were allegedly talking about Geo News DN Rana Jawad and senior journalist Nusrat Javed without taking their names that had been sent two baskets as gifts by the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Moreover, Pervaiz Rasheed was also talking about senior analyst Hafeezullah Niazi and anchorperson Babar Sattar in the alleged telephonic conversation with Maryam Nawaz. During the conversation, Pervaiz Rasheed was heard comparing media persons to ‘barking dogs”.
