Nawaz Sharif seeks ‘guarantee’ before return; Shujaat likely to visit London

PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has sought a guarantee before his return to Pakistan to ascertain that he will not face any action from the government after his arrival in Pakistan.

The development came after PML-Q leader Salik Hussain met Nawaz Sharif in London. Sources said that the PML-N Quaid was not satisfied by the assurance of Salik and expressed willingness to meet Shujaat personally.

Salik Hussain and Nawaz Sharif met on Saturday in London in which they decided to work together to bail the country out of the difficulties it was facing.

Salik’s meeting with Nawaz is considered important in view of the possible dissolution of the Punjab Assembly on PTI chief Imran Khan’s call. They said Salik met Nawaz to convey his father Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s important message, Express Tribune reported.

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz were also present during the meeting held at Avenfield Apartment.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, Chaudhry Salik said that he has requested the PML-N supremo to return to Pakistan. However, he said, the former premier has not given any final date regarding his return.

He also rejected the notion of dissolution of assemblies, noting that incumbent Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi did not take Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain into confidence before joining the government. He further said that Moonis Elahi can contact him anytime he wants. “We want to work together for the betterment of the country, not for personal gains, he added.

Nawaz Sharif still reluctant to return despite facing internal pressure

Salik noted that Shujaat Hussain will be the president of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) till 2024. “He [Shujaat] will lead the party in the next election”, he said, noting that those who talked about the removal of Chaudhry Shujaat, sat together on the same evening.

The ruling political parties have expedited efforts to recover their political strength in their strongholds after Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) mounted pressure on the coalition government to announce an election date and a deadlock created in the dialogues post-conditional offer by the former premier Imran Khan.
