Northern Sindh Becomes Save Haven For Honor Killing

Dr Aisha emphasized everybody needs to work together against the rising cases to dispel fear and disappointment among the women in the province

As many as 91 people including 66 women and 25 men have fallen prey to honor killing in the northern part of Sindh province during the past six months.

Sindh Suhai Sath Organization Chairman Dr Aisha Hassan Dharejo expressed grave concerns on the rise in honor killing cases in the province.

Unfolding details of the incidents in a press conference, the official said 16 people including 13 women and 3 men were killed in the Kandhkot district.

She added that 13 people were killed in Jacobabad, 10 people including 9 women in Shikarpur, 9 people including 5 women and 4 men in Sukkur, and 7 women were killed in the name of honor in Ghotki.

Dr Aisha Hassan Dharejo told the death toll in the Larkana district is 6 while 5 women in Khairpur and 25 people  in other parts of Sindh were also killed over the same reason.

She added that the bodies of 6 women killed in the kutcha areas of Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Ghotki, and Sukkur were dumped in the river.

She criticized the lethargy of the police and said that no action was launched against the perpetrators.

Dr Aisha told the media that in a heart-wrenching incident, a woman was buried alive  in Dad Laghari area of Ghotki district but the police turned blind eyes to it.

The activist said a man named Rasheed Bangwar killed his wife Saghran on the wedding night and threw her body in a river. However, she lamented that the police haven’t arrested the suspect yet.

Dr Aisha said the rising cases of honor killing is an alarming situation for the Sindh government and police.

She added Sindh Suhai Sath Organization is raising the issue of women’s rights and for putting an end to the vicious practice on every forum.

The activist said that the government legislates laws for the protection of women but they are not enforced.

Dr Aisha emphasized everybody needs to work together against the rising honor killings in Sindh to dispel fear and disappointment among the women in the province.

The analysts have also questioned the apathy of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on the issue.

They said the party ruling the province for over a decade has failed to eradicate the deep-rooted scourge owing to which hundreds of people lose their lives every year.

They have demanded PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto ensure the women in his province get their rights which he has always advocated.
