Rape in Pakistan: Even PM Supporters Turned Their Backs on Him

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan yet again lands in trouble and annoyed even his staunch supporters after he shed light on the reason for an increase in rape cases in Pakistan in his recent interview with Jonathan Swan for Axios on HBO.

It started when the host mentioned that Imran Khan emphasized upon the practice of women wearing veils “is to stop temptation, not every man has willpower”.

To which, the premier clarified that the concept of purdah (veil) is to avoid temptation in society.

Answering another question that woman-wear has any effect, PM Imran Khan said, “If a woman is wearing very few clothes it will have an impact, it will have an impact on the men unless they’re robots. I mean its common sense”.

As these remarks were aired, many netizens, journalists, celebrities who were considered Khan’s die-hard supporters hit the roof over his statement regarding rape in Pakistan and #RapeApologistSelectedPM started trending on Twitter on Tuesday.

Taking to their Twitter handles, many of them stated facts to show the mirror to the premier, discouraging his logic.

Pakistani fashion designer Deepak Perwani stood against the prime minister.

Moreover, journalist Mehr Tarar said that PM should avoid giving his personal explanations for the increase in sexual abuse and rape cases in Pakistan.

In addition to it, PR mogul and fashion designer Frieha Altaf stated a recent incident that happened 3 days ago.

Further, journalist Mahwash Ajaz made a Twitter thread to explain the bitter reality of Pakistani society and advised the premier to choose words wisely on such sensitive topics.
