Cyclone Biparjoy: More than 500 buildings may collapse in Karachi

Commissioner of Karachi has informed Chief Minister of Sindh yesterday that 578 buildings in Karachi are extremely damaged

In view of fear of dangerous storm Biparjoy, district administration of Karachi has provided list of 500 damaged buildings in city to Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah. Analysts say that what district administration was thinking before when the danger came to the fore, it has provided the list of affected buildings to the Chief Minister of Sindh. While Cyclone Buparjoy can hit Karachi’s shores anytime.

According to the latest reports, the dangerous storm is moving towards Karachi, the capital of Sindh, at a speed of 150 km per hour. At present, Cyclone Buperjoy is only 300 kilometers away from Karachi. Winds gusting in and out of the storm are 80 to 120 km/h.

According to the Department of Meteorology, Cyclone Buparjoy did not hit the coasts of Karachi as strongly as it will hit the coasts of other cities. However, according to the Meteorological Department, stormy winds will blow in Karachi, there will be a cloud burst, meaning the clouds will freeze and rain.

Yesterday, Commissioner Karachi while giving a briefing to Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said that 578 multi-storied buildings of the city of Karachi are very damaged.

The Commissioner Karachi has requested the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah to evacuate these buildings immediately as there is a danger that these multi-storied dilapidated buildings may collapse if strong winds blow. There is a risk of serious loss of life.

In the briefing, it was mentioned that most of the damaged buildings are found in the southern district of Karachi. Southern District includes Clifton, Defense and Saddar areas.

According to the briefing, there are 476 damaged buildings in South District of Karachi. 66 buildings are damaged in Central District. 23 buildings are affected in Kemari district. Similarly, 14 buildings in Korangi district and 13 buildings in Sharqi district are damaged. 4 buildings are damaged in Malir district and two buildings are damaged in West district.

On the other hand, Sindh Building Control Authority issued the latest order to stop work on the under-construction buildings.

Practitioners have severely criticized the district administration of Karachi and raised the question, “What miracle will Sindh Chief Minister show in one day that nothing will happen to the damaged buildings or he will demolish the buildings in one day?”

Analysts say that now it is being said that the affected buildings are being vacated, why was this not done earlier, when the problem came to a head, the administration has taken action. If only the administration would like to tell where such a large number of people will go. Even if the buildings are vacated, what action has the district administration taken to protect the other buildings along with the affected buildings? These are questions that Commissioner Karachi will certainly not have the answers to.
