Google & YouTube’s New Policy Much Safer For Young Users

Taking new measures, Google will turn off its "location history" feature and YouTube will remove "overly commercial content" from its YouTube Kids app

Prioritizing young users’ safety and parents’ concern, Google introduces a new policy of blocking ad targeting and it is also redefining YouTube Kids searching tools.

Taking new measures, the company said it would turn off its “location history” feature, which tracks location data, for users under 18 globally.

Google will also expand the types of age-sensitive ad categories that are blocked for users up to 18 and will turn on safe searching filters for users up to that age.

In this regard, parents are required to remove the young person’s images from Google Image search results.

Google’s Kids and Families General Manager said, “Some countries are implementing regulations in this area, and as we comply with these regulations, we’re looking at ways to develop consistent product experiences and user controls for kids and teens globally”.

On the flip side, Google’s video-streaming website, YouTube, confirmed that it is going to change the default upload setting to its most-private option for teens aged 13-17 in the coming week.

So, the content will only be viewable by the user and people they choose and it’s up to them if they want to make their content public.

Further, YouTube will also remove overly commercial content from its YouTube Kids app, videos that only encourage children to spend money.

A feature named Safe Search on Google will be enabled by default for all users under 18 so that it filters out explicit results.

A new safety section will be available on the Play Store that will guide parents on which applications to download and provide a detailed insight into the collected data.
