FDA Validates Remdesivir as Drug to Treat Coronavirus

Anti-viral drug, however, cannot prevent death from Covid-19

WEB DESK: United States (US) Food and Drug Administration Authority (FDA) has validated remdesivir as the first drug to treat coronavirus.

The drug had been widely used by medical practitioners on critical patients as it produced substantial results in recovery.

Remdesivir was originally developed as a treatment for Ebola and Hepatitis C but it showed jamming reproduction of coronavirus into new genes.

The drug had been granted emergency authorization in May after a trial by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Since then, it has been used on patients above 12 years-old while it successfully reduced the recovery time of infected patients.

Even US President Donald Trump received remdesivir after he began showing symptoms of the pandemic virus earlier this month.

However, the drug cannot prevent death from the pandemic virus but help to boost recovery.

FDA Commissioner Dr. Stephen M. Hahn termed the development as a ‘milestone in the coronavirus pandemic’. He said that the approval was supported by data compiled from multiple clinical trials assessed rigorously.
