Indian Chief Justice Comments on Media Get ‘Coverage’

While recalling the words of Lord Alfred Denning, the known English judge, CJI Ramana said that the best judge is one who is less known and seen in the media

Indian Chief Justice NV Ramana gratuitously spoke against appearance of judges on media and ironically got coverage for his remarks in the famous Indian dailies and channels.

While recalling the words of Lord Alfred Denning, the known English judge, Indian Chief Justice Ramana said that the best judge is one who is less known and seen in the media.

He also referred to Justice R V Raveendran, former Supreme Court judge, as the legend who increased the prestige of the apex court of India.

While addressing the launch of the book Anomalies in Law and Justice by Justice Raveendran, the chief justice expressed his opinion about media coverage in India but seemingly neglected the importance of media outlets in the changing world.

Similarly, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has announced to modify its rules to curb criticism against judges and  decisions of the bar council.

“An advocate shall not do any unlawful act, he/she shall not make any statement in the print, electronic or social media, which is indecent or derogatory, defamatory or motivated, malicious or mischievous against any court or judge or any member of the judiciary, or against state bar council or Bar Council of India nor shall any advocate engage in any willful violation, disregard or defiance of any resolution or order of the state bar council or Bar Council of India and any such act/conduct shall amount to misconduct and such advocates would be liable to be proceeded with under section 35 or 36 of the Advocates’ Act, 1961, the notification read.

The rule also prohibits lawyers from publishing or releasing any statement in print, electronic or social media against any resolution or the order of BCI.
