Pope Francis Criticizes War in Afghanistan in an Interview

Pope claimed that the war was an outsider’s attempt to impose democracy in the country

Pope Francis poured scorn on the 2-decade-long-war in Afghanistan during an interview on the radio.

Pope Francis claimed that the war was an outsider’s attempt to impose democracy in Afghanistan.

“It is necessary to put an end to the irresponsible policy of intervening from outside and building democracy in other countries, ignoring the traditions of the peoples,” he said while quoting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s words.

Pope’s interview took place at the Vatican last week and its content was vetted by the pope himself.

He also said that while taking a departure from Afghanistan not all eventualities were taken into account.

“I don’t know whether there will be a review or not but certainly there was a lot of deception perhaps on the part of the new authorities”, he added.

During the interview, in an unconventional manner, the Pope was asked questions about his health to which he responded that his body is adjusting well to the surgery.

Notably, Pope Francis underwent bowel surgery in early July.
