The heart of Lahore, Alhamra Arts Council, paid homage to Punjabi Sufi poet and Pir Syed Waris Shah on his death anniversary for his countless contributions to Punjabi literature.
For a long time, the life of Sufi poet Waris Shah has been fictionalized in Punjabi-language films.
Earlier, in 1964, a Pakistani film titled Waris Shah featured Inayat Hussain Bhatti in the title role and another film was released in India in 1980 that highlights the life of Shah.
Waris Shah rose to popularity for his seminal work in Heer Ranjha and he was considered as the Shakespeare of Punjabi Language.
The poet breathed his last in 1799 but his work in regards to the partition of Pakistan and India had been well received by both countries.

This year, the art center celebrated the 223rd death anniversary of Syed Waris Shah.
Renowned singer Taimur Afghani sung Heer Waris Shah on the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Executive Director (ED) of Lahore Arts Council, Ijaz Ahmad Minhas, said that Shah’s books spread the message of love, peace, and security in Pakistani society.
He added that the Sufi poet not only gave rise to the Punjabi language but also excelled in beautiful recitation of poetry.
The new ED assured that Punjab will continue to broadcast live Sufi programs for folk music lovers.
