Imran Khan video leak: Hamid Mir’s statement raises questions

Hamid Mir's statement regarding Imran Khan video leak has raised many questions about the government's involvement in audio and video leaks.

Senior journalist and anchorperson Hamid Mir’s statement raised many questions in which he claimed that Maryam Nawaz had stopped the leaking of a controversial video of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan.

Hamid Mir made the claims while interviewing Defence Minister and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) central leader Khawaja Asif.

He questioned Asif whether he knew about a video of Imran Khan which was stopped from being leaked online by PML-N top leaders. The anchorperson added that Rana Sanaullah had watched the controversial video.

To this, Khawaja Asif replied that he did not watch any video, however, he added that he firmly believed in keeping private affairs secret instead of exposing them.

Pointing at back-to-back audio and video leaks, Asif criticised the move and said that many people are violating the privacy of each other just for sake of their interests which should be stopped. He said that PML-N has no role in such activities.

Later, Hamid Mir said that he has a reliable report that when PML-N came into power and Maryam Nawaz had stopped Imran Khan’s obscene video from being leaked online. The anchorperson further said that Nawaz Sharif had also received some content of political rivals but he stopped making it public.

It is pertinent to mention here that Rana Sanaullah had confirmed before Mir in an interview that he watched the controversial video but he did not have access to it.

Analysts said that Mir’s claims raised three questions. They said that the journalist’s statement proved that Maryam Nawaz was meddling in the government’s affairs and she has powers to endorse or reject the ruling party’s decisions.

They added whether Maryam Nawaz was overruling PML-N President and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s decisions. Analysts said that the statement also endorsed that Maryam is in contact with someone other than the government.

Moreover, Asif’s statement confirmed that the audio leaks of PTI leaders were being released by the PML-N government as if it could stop the leaking of the audio and videos then it could make it public as well.

Analysts said that PML-N should clarify its stance regarding Mir’s statement, otherwise, the suspicions of the government’s involvement in the audio leaks could not be ruled out by the masses.
