Fake News on Junaid Safdar, Will PMDA Help?

Maryam Nawaz said that if the TV channel that ran the news does not apologize immediately, she will take them to court and file a defamation lawsuit

Two renowned media channels including ARY News and PTV News aired fake news regarding Maryam Nawaz’s son, Junaid Safdar, who owns offshore companies, demanding a need to implement the PMDA bill.

In response to the news, Maryam Nawaz issued a statement saying that if the TV channel that ran the news does not apologize immediately, she will take them to court and file a defamation lawsuit.

Moreover, Junaid Safdar also took strong exception to the reports, saying that he would take legal action against media outlets that ran the news.

On the other hand, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Shahbaz Gill wrote, “Is it possible that there is an investigation of theft, etc and Maryam baji is left behind? Never, ever”.

It is important to note here that All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) are the ones who staged protests against the proposed Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) bill.

Therefore, experts say that if these media houses were not against the implementation of the PMDA bill, there was a strong possibility that Fawad Chaudhry and Shahbaz Gill would have been arrested for airing fake news regarding Junaid Safdar.
